& Juliet – Jukebox fun transforms a classic Shakespeare tale
William Shakespeare adored the story of the star-crossed Montague and Capulet teenagers and their doomed love. West Side Story, the musical, was inspired by the same ancient tale. Now there's a brand new jukebox musical in the breeze, and it takes the story of Juliet to an entirely new place. What might happen if Juliet didn't die after all, but survived Romeo's death? What would she do? Would she flee to Paris, surrounded by her best and most loyal friends? This fresh musical tells an alternative tale, and it's due in theatreland for autumn 2019.
One of the biggest of several mysteries surrounding this show is the fact that it premieres at a massive venue – Manchester Opera House – then transfers to another truly huge venue, the Shaftesbury theatre in the West End. It's unusual for an unknown show to book itself into such large venues. Is it a mere mark of confidence or a hint that something very special is about to happen, something that will see thousands of us fighting for tickets? The truth is, we don't know yet. Nor does anyone else. But there's nothing quite so much fun as a mystery... watch this space!
